Mercifully grant that we,
walking in the way of the cross,
may find in it none other than
the way of life and peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(Collect for 3rd Sunday in Lent, ASB)

God be with thee in every pass, Jesus be with thee on every hill
Spirit be with thee on every stream, headland and ridge and lawn;
Each sea and land, each moor and meadow,
Each lying down, each rising up,
In the trough of the waves, on the crest of the billows,
Each step of the journey thou goest.

(Carmina Gadelica)

Be thou a bright flame before me,
Be thou a guiding star above me,
Be thou a smooth path below me,
Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me,
Today, tonight and forever.

(St Columba)

Eternal light, shine in our hearts;
Eternal goodness, deliver us from evil;
Eternal power, be our support;
Eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance;
Eternal pity, have mercy upon us;
That with all our hearts and mind and soul and strength
We may seek thy face
And be brought by thine infinite mercy
To thy holy presence
Through our Lord, Jesus Christ.

(Alcuin)

God to enfold me, God to surround me,
God in my speaking, God in my thinking,
God in my sleeping, God in my waking,
God in my watching, God in my hoping,
God in my life, God in my lips,
God in my soul, God in my heart,
God in my suffering, God in my slumber,
God in mine ever-living soul,
God in my eternity.

(Carmina Gadelica)

Blessing and brightness, wisdom, thanksgiving,
Great power and might to the king who rules over all.
Glory and honour and goodwill,
Praise and the sublime song of minstrels,
Overflowing love from every heart to the king of heaven and earth.
To the chosen trinity has been joined
Before all, after all, universal blessing,
Blessing and everlasting blessing,
Blessing everlasting and blessing.

(Old Irish, 9th century)

St Patrick's Breastplate

Christ as a light
Illumine and guide me Christ as a shield O'ershadow me
Christ under me
Christ over me
Christ beside me
On my left and my right
This day be within and without me
Lowly and meek yet All-powerful
Be in the heart Of each to whom I speak
In the mouth of each Who speaks unto me
This day be within and Without me
Lowly and meek yet All-powerful
Christ as a light
Christ as a shield
Christ beside me
On my left and my right.
Amen

Nunc dimittis

At last, all-powerful Master,
You give leave to your servant
To go in peace, according to your promise.

For my eyes have seen your salvation
Which you have prepared for all nations,
A light to enlighten the gentiles
And give glory to Israel, your people.
